711 gensan Ryan Clark tears up in emotional tribute to 'superhuman' Randy Moss amid major health scare READ MORE: Tom Brady's heartfelt message to Randy Moss amid health scare By LEOCCIANO CALLAO Published: 20:30, 13 December 2024 | Updated: 20:58, 13 December 2024 e-mail 11 shares View comments ESPN's Ryan Clark had watery eyes as he extended his thoughts to Randy Moss and his family amid the legendary wide receiver's health scare. Earlier in December, Moss rallied fans in prayer on social media after revealing he had been 'battling something internally'. The remarks came as he explained why he wore sunglasses during Sunday NFL Countdown. Viewers also noticed Moss' eyes appearing yellow during an airing of the program, leading to him making a public statement without revealing what he is dealing with. Speaking on The Pivot podcast, Clark paid a heartfelt tribute to his fellow football analyst and revealed that he had reached out to Moss following the news. 'My prayers are with them. I reached out to Randy... I mean, just to check in,' Clark said. 'Not so he replies or to be in his business. 'But I would hope if I'm going through something, that I have at least made public that I'm going through something, that people who cared about me would reach out to say they care,' he added. Randy Moss is a hero to many. He was a tall, lean, ultimately talented, speed receiver from Rand, West Virginia with Super Human skill! He was no bigger hero to anyone than his son Thaddeus & his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as he takes time to get his health... pic.twitter.com/ZU4sJfvvW0 — Ryan Clark (@Realrclark25) December 13, 2024 Ryan Clark paid a heartfelt tribute to Randy Moss following news of his ongoing health scare Read More ESPN analysts pay emotional tribute to Randy Moss at start of NFL Countdown 'Would reach out to say that 'I heard your call for prayers and as a prayer warrior myself, I'm joining you in reaching out to God for help.'' Clark then cited how much he looked up to his father and the strength he found in him, despite not being 'superhuman' like Moss. 'I can only think about my dad,' Clark shared. 'I remember being a little kid and I was about to fight this kid down the street. His dad was outside egging me on, teasing me. Because my mom was down there and she didn't want me to fight. ' 'And I remember saying 'You wouldn't say that to my dad.' I remember being so brave because my pops would whip him,' he continued. 'I didn't know if he could but he was my dad. And my dad wasn't one of the greatest wide receivers of all time.' 'I couldn't imagine having Randy Moss as my dad and believing that he is superhuman, and being blessed with all of these traits that mere mortals aren't blessed with... then having to be faced with his mortality. That would be very hard for me.' Clark also addressed how Larry Fitzgerald Sr. and Brett Favre disclosed Moss' supposed condition. 'Whether I knew what was wrong with him or we knew what's wrong with him or not, I would be so protective of him, I would want that to be his to disclose,' Clark said. In a video posted on Instagram, Moss said: 'Throughout the week of the holidays, your boy has been battling something internal. Last week, fans were concerned for Moss as they saw his eyes appearing yellow on TV Moss was wearing sunglasses on NFL Countdown due to an 'internal' health issue 'I just ask for all the prayer warriors to put their blessings on me and my family in these hard times. 'People were asking about my eyes last week. If you see these on in Sunday NFL Countdown (puts on glasses) Adam Schefter calls them the Michigan turnover glasses that they sent from Ohio last night. 'Your boy is going to get through it. I got a great team of doctors, and I got a great family around me. On December 6, ESPN announced that Moss stepped away from his duties with the network to deal with his condition. 'So many times, we were just taught to go through everything and be strong and be tough,' Clark said. 'But we can't beat it all. And time waits on no man. And Father Time is undefeated.' 'From my family to my Pivot family, Randy, we love you. You are, to many of us, superhuman and a superhero - I know for your family, for sure. Our prayers are definitely with y'all.' Across his career, Moss led the NFL in receiving touchdowns five times - including in 2007 when he set the all-time record for touchdown catches in a season. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame in 2018, and was named to the NFL's 2000s All-Decade Team and the NFL's 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. Lebawit Lily Girma | (TNS) Bloomberg News When winter rolls around, travelers predictably turn their attention to beaches. And this year, it’s the destination that comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean” that’s experiencing outsize demand from Americans planning a warm island vacation. Talk about trashing stereotypes. Related Articles Travel | Would you pay $700 a night to sleep under the stars at this Colorado resort? Travel | Thailand’s starring role in ‘The White Lotus’ is about to pay off Travel | 5 under-the-radar travel destinations the UN says you should visit Travel | Gift ideas for people planning their next trip Travel | Lights and decor, réveillon meals make Christmastime special in New Orleans Puerto Rico has recovered overseas visitors (excluding those from Canada and Mexico) faster than any U.S. state or territory — a staggering 85% increase over its 2019 overseas inbound visitor levels as of 2023, according to an October study from the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office. There are now more daily flights from the U.S. West Coast, and hotel bookings are 6% higher so far in this last quarter of 2024 year-over-year. It’s a trifecta of tourism growth: more visitors, but also longer stays and a higher spend that reached a record $9.8 billion in 2023, boosting small businesses as well as major brands. “We don’t have a slow season in Puerto Rico anymore,” says Brad Dean, chief executive officer at Discover Puerto Rico. Even if they’re not booking, people are dreaming about “La Isla.” By tracking flight searches for trips between November 2024 and February 2025, a measure of “inspirational” demand, tourism intelligence company Mabrian Technologies reports Puerto Rico is up 9% compared with the same period last year and leads Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the Bahamas in the Caribbean proper. Only Costa Rica ranked higher in the wider region. Dean attributes Puerto Rico’s ongoing tourism growth to a strategic effort to reposition the island’s brand as more than a sun-and-sea destination, starting back in 2018. That led to the Live Boricua campaign, which began in 2022 and leaned heavily on culture, history and cuisine and was, Dean says, “a pretty bold departure” in the way Puerto Rico was showcased to travelers. He adds that at least $2 billion in tourism spend is linked to this campaign. “We (also) haven’t shied away from actively embracing the LGBTQ+ community, and that has opened up Puerto Rico to audiences that may not have considered the Caribbean before,” Dean says. Hotels are preparing to meet this growing demand: A number of established boutique properties are undergoing upgrades valued between $4 million and more than $50 million, including Hotel El Convento; La Concha, which will join the Marriott Autograph Collection; Condado Vanderbilt Hotel; and the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar. That’s in addition to ultra-chic options that are coming online in 2025, including the adults-only Alma San Juan, with rooms overlooking Plaza Colón in the heart of Old San Juan, and the five-star Veranó boutique hotel in San Juan’s trendy Santurce neighborhood. The beachfront Ritz-Carlton San Juan in Isla Verde will also be reopening seven years after Hurricane Maria decimated the island. The travel industry’s success is helping boost employment on the island, to the tune of 101,000 leisure and hospitality jobs as of September 2024, a 26% increase over pre-pandemic levels, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Efforts to promote Puerto Rico’s provinces beyond the San Juan metro area — such as surfing hub Rincón on the west coast, historical Ponce on the south coast and Orocovis for nature and coffee haciendas in the central mountains —have spread the demand to small businesses previously ignored by the travel industry. Take Sheila Osorio, who leads workshops on Afro-Puerto Rican bomba music and dance at Taller Nzambi, in the town of Loíza, 15 miles east of San Juan; or Wanda Otero, founder of cheese-producing company Vaca Negra in Hatillo, an hour’s drive west of Old San Juan, where you can join a cheese-making workshop and indulge in artisanal cheese tastings. “The list of businesses involved in tourism has gone from 650 in 2018 to 6,100, many of which are artists and artisans,” Dean says. While New Yorkers and Miami residents have always been the largest visitor demographic, Dean says more mainland Americans now realize that going to Puerto Rico means passport-free travel to enjoy beaches, as well as opportunities to dine in Michelin-rated restaurants, hike the only rainforest in the U.S. and kayak in a bioluminescent bay. Visitors from Chicago and Dallas, for example, have increased by approximately 40% from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, compared with the same period in 2022-2023, and more travelers are expected from Denver now that United Airlines Holdings Inc. has kicked off its first nonstop service to San Juan, beginning on Oct. 29. Previously, beach destinations that were easy to reach on direct flights from Denver included Mexico, Belize and California, but now Puerto Rico joins that list with a 5.5-hour nonstop route that cuts more than two hours from the next-best option. Given United Airlines’ hub in San Francisco, it could mean more travelers from the Golden State in the near future, too. In December, U.S. airlines will have 3,000 more seats per day to the territory compared with the same period last year, for a total of 84,731 — surpassing even Mexico and the Dominican Republic in air capacity, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, the island’s primary gateway, is projecting a record volume of 13 million passengers by year’s end — far surpassing the 9.4 million it saw in 2019. As for Hinchcliffe’s “floating island of garbage” line, Dean says it was “a terribly insensitive attempt at humor” that transformed outrage into a marketing silver lining, with an outpouring of positive public sentiment and content on Puerto Rico all over social media. Success, as that old chestnut goes, may be the best revenge. “It was probably the most efficient influencer campaign we’ve ever had,” Dean says, “a groundswell of visitors who posted their photos and videos and said, ‘This is the Puerto Rico that I know.’” ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. Rangers' Igor Shesterkin gets extension, sets record for goalie payJets expect RB Hall (knee) back against JaguarsScrim, a 17-pound mutt that's mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, T-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he'd had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he's roamed free. The dog’s fans include Myra and Steve Foster, who wrote “Ode to Scrim” to the tune of Ricky Nelson’s 1961 hit, “I’m a Travelin’ Man.” 'I'm a travelin' dog and I've made a lot of stops/All over this town...' Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. She lost everything — home, car, possessions — in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in the aftermath, found her calling rescuing pets. “I was like, ‘This is what I should be doing,’” Cheramie said. “I was born to rescue.” She launched Zeus’ Rescues, a nonprofit shelter that now averages 600 cat and dog adoptions a year and offers free pet food to anyone who needs it. She helped Scrim find the home he first escaped from. It was Cheramie's window Scrim leaped from in November. She's resumed her relentless mission since then, posting flyers on telephone poles and logging social media updates on his reported whereabouts. She's invested thousands of dollars on wildlife cameras, thermal sensors and other gear. She took a course offered by the San Diego Zoo on the finer points of tranquilizing animals. And she's developed a network of volunteers — the kind of neighbors who are willing to grid-search a city at 3 a.m. '...And at every stop I own the heart, of at least one lovely...' People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. “Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you,” Brown said. Neighbor Tammy Murray had to close her furniture store and lost her father to Parkinson's disease. This search, she says, got her mojo back. “Literally, for months, I’ve done nothing but hunt this dog,” said Murray, 53. “I feel like Wile E. Coyote on a daily basis with him.” Murray drives the Zeus' Rescues van toward reported Scrim sightings. She also handles a tactical net launcher, which looks like an oversized flashlight and once misfired, shattering the van's window as Scrim sped away. After realizing Scrim came to recognize the sound of the van's diesel engine, Murray switched to a Vespa scooter for stealth. '...If you're ever in the 9th Ward stop and see/My cute little mini poodle...' Near-misses have been tantalizing. The search party spotted Scrim napping beneath an elevated house, and wrapped construction netting around the perimeter, but an over-eager volunteer broke ranks and dashed forward, leaving an opening Scrim slipped through. Scrim's repeated escapades prompted near-daily local media coverage and a devoted online following. Cheramie can relate. “We’re all running from something or to something," she said. "He's doing that, too.” Cheramie's team dreams of placing the pooch in a safe and loving environment. But a social media chorus growing under the hashtag #FreeScrim has other ideas — they say the runaway should be allowed a life of self-determination. The animal rescue volunteers consider that misguided. “The streets of New Orleans are not the place for a dog to be free,” Cheramie said. “It’s too dangerous.” '...and my Shar-Pei doll down in old Treme/Waits for my return...' Scrim was a mess when Cheramie briefly recaptured him in October, with matted fur, missing teeth and a tattered ear. His trembling body was scraped and bruised, and punctured by projectiles. A vet removed one, but decided against operating to take out a possible bullet. The dog initially appeared content indoors, sitting in Cheramie's lap or napping beside her bed. Then while she was out one day, Scrim chewed through a mesh screen, dropped 13 feet to the ground and squeezed through a gap in the fence, trotting away. Murray said Cheramie's four cats probably spooked him. Cheramie thinks they may have gotten territorial. Devastated but undeterred, the pair is reassessing where Scrim might fit best — maybe a secure animal sanctuary with big outdoor spaces where other dogs can keep him company. Somewhere, Murray says, “where he can just breathe and be.”

Former CNN host Don Lemon joined countless critics in slamming Time magazine for making President-elect Donald Trump 2024’s “Person of the Year,” arguing Thursday on “The Don Lemon Show” that they should’ve picked someone “who stands for democracy.” “Just because you are elected president of the United States does not mean that you should be ‘Person of the Year,’” he said . “Time magazine, what are you doing? Let me ask you ... what would you say to those women who I guess still read Time magazine?” “You have someone on the cover of your magazine who is an adjudicated assaulter,” Lemon continued. Trump was found liable in 2023 by a New York City jury for sexually abusing author E. Jean Carroll and for defaming her in his statements after Carroll went public in 2019 with claims that Trump raped her in the 1990s. “You have someone who inspired an insurrection,” Lemon said in reference to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters. “We have someone who, without a doubt, the evidence is there, tried to overturn a free and fair election.” “And you name them ‘Person of the Year,’” he added. Time’s “Person of the Year” title is notably not an endorsement, as previous recipients include dictators Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin , but an acknowledgment of how influential the person is. Time editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs explained as much on television Thursday amid outcries on social media . “Is this a joke?” Lemon nonetheless asked on his show. “Did we get something wrong? Did someone scam us? Are we sure about this, producers? There is a convicted felon on the cover of Time magazine as the ‘Person of the Year.’ Maybe we’re being scammed.” Trump was convicted earlier this year on 34 charges of falsifying business documents ahead of the 2016 presidential election to cover up his alleged sexual relations with a porn star. Trump had pleaded not guilty to all charges. His Nov. 26 sentencing hearing was canceled after the election last month. Jacobs said Thursday on “Morning Joe” that the choice to name Trump “Person of the Year” was “obvious,” precisely because of these historic moments — including the assassination attempt against Trump in July — and posited that “we are living in the Age of Trump.” “For marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is Time’s 2024 Person of the Year,” he wrote in an article Thursday . Related From Our PartnerHOUSTON — Houston Texans receiver Tank Dell will miss the remainder of the season after dislocating a knee and tearing an ACL in a loss to Kansas City on Saturday. Coach DeMeco Ryans revealed the details of his injury Monday before announcing that Dell would have season-ending surgery for a second straight year. He fractured his fibula in Week 13 against the Broncos as a rookie last season and had surgery on it the following day. “He dislocated the knee, he tore the ACL, other things there he’ll have to get repaired," Ryans said. “So he’ll be out for the year.” Ryans didn't have a date for Dell's surgery for this injury, but said it would be soon. Dell was injured on a 30-yard touchdown catch in Houston’s 27-19 loss Saturday. He was coming across the back of the end zone and made the spectacular catch on a pass from C.J. Stroud before colliding with Houston teammate Jared Wayne on the way to the ground. Dell immediately grabbed at his knee and Wayne signaled for team trainers, who spent several minutes working on the wide receiver while teammates waited anxiously. People are also reading... Dell was eventually placed on a stretcher and driven in a covered medical cart off the field, and then he was taken to the hospital. He stayed in the hospital overnight before flying back to Houston on Sunday. Stroud, who is so close to Dell that he considers him a brother, cried the entire time the receiver was down on the field and for a while after he was taken away. “It was just not easy for me to sit there and be emotional,” Stroud said Monday. “But it’s something that we all go through in life and it’s easy to be a fake tough guy. It’s easy to go through life acting like everything doesn’t affect you, but deep down we all know we’re going through something.” Some criticized Stroud for crying. But he believes a display of emotion such as that was important to remind people of the human aspect of this game and the toll it can take on players. “It’s good for young men and women out there, kids who are brought up — and I was taught this too as a kid, not from my parents but just from the world, don’t let anybody see you emotional,” he said. “Don’t let anybody see you down and yeah there’s some truth to that in in certain aspects, but there’s also life and I think it was good for people to see me in that light and knowing that there is still a human factor to me and I’m a normal person.” Browns' Garrett not interested in rebuild CLEVELAND — Two days before recording another milestone, resume-building sack on Sunday at Cincinnati, Myles Garrett delivered a jarring hit — on the Browns. In this case, any roughness could be deemed necessary. Garrett piled on to what has been a painful and puzzling season in Cleveland by saying he doesn't have any interest in going through another rebuild and wants to know exactly what the organization's offseason plans are to fix things. If that wasn't enough, Garrett indicated for the first time that he would consider leaving the Browns if his vision doesn't mesh with the team's ambitions. “It’s a possibility,” he said of playing elsewhere. "But I want to be a Cleveland Brown. I want to play my career here.” It's unclear how Garrett's comments were received by owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, who have plenty to consider as the Browns (3-12) head into the final two weeks of a season that began with playoff expectations and could be followed by upheaval. The Browns haven't been this bad since going 0-16 in 2017. Rodgers acknowledges Jets' run may end Aaron Rodgers is still contemplating his playing future. The star quarterback knows if he returns to the field, it might be out of hands whether it's with the New York Jets. The 41-year-old Rodgers said last week that he'll take some time after this season, his 20th in the NFL, to determine what he wants to do next. On Monday, he suggested a decision on whether he'll return with the Jets could be made for him the day after the team's regular-season finale. “I think there’s a world where they just say, ‘Hey, thank you, we’re going to go in another direction’ on Jan. 6,” Rodgers said during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “That’s a possibility,” he added. "I think there’s also a possibility we’re going to wait and see who the new staff is.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!

The states Americans left behind to move to Florida — and where people moving out of Florida headed for greener pasturesDonald Trump has threatened to seize the Panama Canal, revived calls to buy Greenland and joked about annexing Canada -- leaving the world guessing once again whether he is serious or not. By challenging the sovereignty of some of Washington's closest allies four weeks before he even returns to the Oval Office, the US-president elect has underscored his credentials as global disruptor-in-chief. His comments have renewed fears from his first term that Trump will end up being harsher on US friends than he is on adversaries like Russia and China. But there are also suspicions that billionaire tycoon Trump is looking for leverage as part of the "art of the deal" -- and that the former reality television star is grabbing headlines to look strong at home and abroad. "It's hard to tell how much of this he really wants, and how much is the latest soundbite that will be heard around the world," said Frank Sesno, a professor at George Washington University and former White House correspondent. "He puts other leaders in position of having to figure out what is literal and what is not," he told AFP. The idea of buying Greenland is not a new one for Trump. He also raised the prospect of purchasing the vast strategic island, a Danish territory, during his first term in office. He revived his push over the weekend when naming his ambassador to Copenhagen, saying the "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity" for US national security. But he received the same answer this time as he did then, with Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede saying on Monday that the resource-rich island was "not for sale." Yet his most headline-grabbing remarks have been on Panama, as he slammed what he called unfair fees for US ships passing through and threatened to demand control of the Panama Canal be returned to Washington. Trump said on Sunday that if Panama did not agree "then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America -- in full, quickly and without question." He also hinted at China's growing influence around the canal, which was built by the United States in 1914 to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was returned to Panama under a 1977 deal. Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino dismissed Trump's threats, saying that "every square meter" of the canal would remain in Panamanian hands. Trump responded on TruthSocial: "We'll see about that!" Trump also teased neighboring Canada last week that it would be a "great idea" to become the 51st US state -- but against a dark backdrop of threatened tariffs. Sesno said it was hard for other countries to know how to deal with Trump's comments. "Well, it's clearly a joke. Or is it? said Sesno. "Imagine if you're the President of Panama, how do you react to something like that? You can't ignore it and your country will not let you. So the ripple effect of these comments is extraordinary." Trump's harsh treatment of US allies also stands in stark contrast to his repeated praise for the leaders of US foes -- including Russia's Vladimir Putin, who invaded Ukraine in 2022 in a bid for a land-grab. But there is still likely to be method behind Trump's rhetoric. "Maybe the message is for China" when Trump talks about buying Greenland, said Stephanie Pezard, senior political scientist with the Rand Corporation. Just as Trump expressed concern about Beijing's influence in Panama, China's growing presence in the Arctic and its ties with Russia were "something that the US is really worried about," Pezard told AFP. But there could also be a signal to Denmark that 'If you're too friendly with China, you'll find us in your way" -- even though Denmark and Greenland had been "very good NATO allies." And perhaps Trump knows the reality. Any US plan to "buy" Greenland would be unfeasible "not just in international law but more broadly in the global order that the US has been trying to uphold," she said. dk/bgs, /PRNewswire/ -- AAR CORP. TOKYO — Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan have announced plans to work toward a merger that would form the world’s third-largest automaker by sales, as the industry undergoes dramatic changes in its transition away from fossil fuels. The two companies said they had signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday and that smaller Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors Corp. also had agreed to join the talks on integrating their businesses. Automakers in Japan have lagged behind their big rivals in electric vehicles and are trying to cut costs and make up for lost time as newcomers like China’s BYD and EV market leader Tesla devour market share. Honda’s president, Toshihiro Mibe, said Honda and Nissan will attempt to unify their operations under a joint holding company. Honda will lead the new management, retaining the principles and brands of each company. They aim to have a formal merger agreement by June and to complete the deal and list the holding company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by August 2026, he said. No dollar value was given and the formal talks are just starting, Mibe said. There are “points that need to be studied and discussed,” he said. “Frankly speaking, the possibility of this not being implemented is not zero.” A merger could result in a behemoth worth more than $50 billion based on the market capitalization of all three automakers. Together, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi would gain scale to compete with Toyota Motor Corp. and with Germany’s Volkswagen AG. Toyota has technology partnerships with Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp. News of a possible merger surfaced earlier this month, with unconfirmed reports saying Taiwan iPhone maker Foxconn was seeking to tie up with Nissan by buying shares from the Japan’s company’s other alliance partner, Renault SA of France. Nissan’s CEO Makoto Uchida said Foxconn had not directly approach his company. He also acknowledged that Nissan’s situation was “severe.” Even after a merger Toyota, which rolled out 11.5 million vehicles in 2023, would remain the leading Japanese automaker. If they join, the three smaller companies would make about 8 million vehicles. In 2023, Honda made 4 million and Nissan produced 3.4 million. Mitsubishi Motors made just over 1 million. “We have come to the realization that in order for both parties to be leaders in this mobility transformation, it is necessary to make a more bold change than a collaboration in specific areas,” Mibe said. Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi earlier agreed to share components for electric vehicles like batteries and to jointly research software for autonomous driving to adapt better to electrification. Nissan has struggled following a scandal that began with the arrest of its former chairman Carlos Ghosn in late 2018 on charges of fraud and misuse of company assets, allegations that he denies. He eventually was released on bail and fled to Lebanon. Speaking Monday to reporters in Tokyo via a video link, Ghosn derided the planned merger as a “desperate move.” From Nissan, Honda could get truck-based body-on-frame large SUVs such as the Armada and Infiniti QX80 that Honda doesn’t have, with large towing capacities and good off-road performance, Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions, told The Associated Press. Nissan also has years of experience building batteries and electric vehicles, and gas-electric hybrid powertrains that could help Honda in developing its own EVs and next generation of hybrids, he said. But the company said in November that it was slashing 9,000 jobs, or about 6% of its global work force, and reducing its global production capacity by 20% after reporting a quarterly loss of 9.3 billion yen ($61 million). It recently reshuffled its management and Uchida, its chief executive, took a 50% pay cut while acknowledging responsibility for the financial woes, saying Nissan needed to become more efficient and respond better to market tastes, rising costs and other global changes. “We anticipate that if this integration comes to fruition, we will be able to deliver even greater value to a wider customer base,” Uchida said. Fitch Ratings recently downgraded Nissan’s credit outlook to “negative,” citing worsening profitability, partly due to price cuts in the North American market. But it noted that it has a strong financial structure and solid cash reserves that amounted to 1.44 trillion yen ($9.4 billion). Nissan’s share price also had fallen to the point where it is considered something of a bargain. On Monday, its Tokyo-traded shares gained 1.6%. They jumped more than 20% after news of the possible merger broke last week. Honda’s shares surged 3.8%. Honda’s net profit slipped nearly 20% in the first half of the April-March fiscal year from a year earlier, as its sales suffered in China. The merger reflects an industry-wide trend toward consolidation. At a routine briefing Monday, Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said he would not comment on details of the automakers’ plans, but said Japanese companies need to stay competitive in the fast changing market. “As the business environment surrounding the automobile industry largely changes, with competitiveness in storage batteries and software is increasingly important, we expect measures needed to survive international competition will be taken,” Hayashi said. Trump offers public show of support for Pete Hegseth, his embattled nominee to lead PentagonFor travelers, Puerto Rico is a floating island of desirabilityDiogo Jota injury latest: Liverpool forward takes big step towards return after Arne Slot updateSouth Korea's ruling party leader said President Yoon Suk Yeol needed to be removed from power for trying to impose martial law, increasing the pressure on him to quit even though members of his People Power Party late on Friday reaffirmed its formal opposition to his impeachment. On Saturday, lawmakers will vote on the main opposition Democratic Party's motion to impeach Yoon, who shocked the nation late on Tuesday when he gave the military sweeping emergency powers in order to root out what he called "anti-state forces" and overcome obstructionist political opponents. Yoon rescinded the declaration about six hours later after parliament, including some members of his party, voted to oppose the decree. The conservative PPP has vowed to oppose the impeachment bill, a position it reaffirmed on Friday night following a lengthy meeting of its lawmakers - at least some of whom would need to back it for the motion to succeed. Yoon said he would listen to the party's concerns, a PPP spokesperson told reporters. Acting Defence Minister Kim Seon-ho said reports that had swirled throughout Friday that there might be another attempt to impose martial law were not true. PPP leader Han had earlier added fuel to those rumors, and suggested the party's stance on impeachment might be shifting, when he said there was "a high risk of extreme actions such as this emergency martial law being repeated" while Yoon remained in power. He also cited "credible evidence" that Yoon had on Tuesday intended to arrest and detain political leaders at Gwacheon, just south of Seoul, and called for Yoon's "immediate suspension". He did not explicitly call for impeachment or respond to reporters when asked for clarification. The presidential office later denied any such order to arrest prominent politicians had been given, the Yonhap news agency reported. Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung said there was still a possibility of another spontaneous late-night declaration by Yoon, though he did not offer substantive evidence. "The situation is getting worse, there are fewer ways (for Yoon) to escape," Lee told Reuters in an interview. "That's why it's very dangerous tonight, because the only chance he has is tonight, and tomorrow morning". Some PPP members urged Yoon to resign before the vote, saying they did not want a repeat of the 2016 impeachment of then-President Park Geun-hye, who left office following months of candlelit protests over an influence-peddling scandal. Her downfall triggered the implosion of the party and a victory by liberals in presidential and general elections. In scenes reminiscent of those protests, thousands of demonstrators holding candles assembled outside parliament on Friday night demanding Yoon's impeachment. YOON NOT SEEN IN PUBLIC To succeed, an impeachment bill would need support from two-thirds of the 300-member assembly. Yoon's party has 108 legislators, so eight would have to side with the opposition for the bill to pass. If parliament votes to impeach, the president is suspended from exercising his powers until an impeachment trial is held by the Constitutional Court. The prime minister serves as leader in an acting capacity. Yoon has not been seen in public since rescinding martial law early on Wednesday and did not attend the PPP meeting on Friday. Following media reports Yoon was on his way to parliament during the day, opposition lawmakers had poured out to the main lobby of the parliament building and set up a scrum to block him if he came. The assembly speaker asked Yoon not to come to parliament, even if he planned to, and said his office would take steps to prevent him from reaching the assembly. Yoon's office denied any such plans. A Reuters reporter saw dozens of official parliamentary vehicles parked across the open spaces surrounding parliament on Friday night - the same spaces in which military helicopters had offloaded troops on Tuesday. Police have launched investigations into the president and Kim Yong-hyun, the defense minister who allegedly encouraged him to declare martial law and who has since resigned. Government and military prosecutors had also decided to conduct a joint investigation into the martial law decision, according to broadcaster YTN. The defense ministry said three army commanders were suspended, while military prosecutors were seeking to bar 10 officers from traveling overseas. Details were slowly emerging about the chaos that engulfed Seoul on Tuesday night following Yoon's surprise declaration, which stirred painful memories of the country's long years of military rule following World War Two. Kwak Jong-geun, the special warfare commander, said he defied an order from then-defense minister Kim to drag lawmakers out of parliament, and instead ordered his troops to not carry live ammunition or enter the area where lawmakers were meeting. "I told them not to go in," he told an opposition lawmaker's YouTube channel. The National Election Commission said in a statement on Friday that around 300 martial law forces had entered premises under its control across the country following Yoon's shock announcement. "The occupation of the National Election Commission, an independent organization under the constitution, is a clear unconstitutional and illegal act," the statement said. Yoon's approval rating plunged to a new low of 13%, according to the latest Gallup Korea poll released on Friday.

The enactment of American sanctions against Pakistan’s ballistic missile program is a deliberate move in the larger context of global geopolitics. The sanctions are not surprising, but they highlight a history of strategic hostility that aimed to undermine Pakistan’s sovereignty, specifically its nuclear deterrence. The development is reminiscent of Kissinger’s subtle threats and a history that was punctuated by both overt and covert efforts to destabilize Pakistan. As the United States and its allies want hegemonic power, the targeting of Pakistan—a nuclear-armed Muslim state—indicates a purposeful effort to diminish the country’s strategic depth. The logic is clear: demolish the only Muslim-majority state capable of maintaining regional balance against hostile nations such as India and Israel. The latest sanctions are not a unique episode, but rather a continuation of a long-standing policy of containing Pakistan through economic, political, and military measures. The timing of these sanctions is significant, as it coincides with a period of global unrest caused by U.S.-Israeli agendas. From Palestine to Iran, the Muslim world is ablaze, with Pakistan standing as a formidable outlier. It is believed by some analysts that the Zionist-driven narrative is aimed at destroying Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal as a final step in ensuring regional dominance. This goal necessitates weakening Pakistan’s military and fracturing the trust between its armed forces and the populace. The role of specific political force, accused of lobbying against Pakistan’s interests abroad, cannot be overlooked. Allegations of collusion with hostile intelligence agencies and attempts to undermine military cohesion add a layer of complexity to the sanctions. By leveraging internal dissent and external pressure, the U.S. aims to achieve what overt military intervention could not—the erosion of Pakistan’s strategic capabilities. It is necessary to analyze the effectiveness of these sanctions in the context of a changing global order. Russia, China, and Turkey are proving that the United States’ unipolar dominance is waning, as evidenced by their resilience against similar measures. Despite a barrage of sanctions, Russia’s economy continues to prosper, and China’s actions against US corporations signal a new era of economic parity. Turkey’s refusal to accept pressure against the S-400 missile system demonstrates Western sanctions’ waning effectiveness. Pakistan sees this shifting situation as a chance to turn eastward. Strategic partnerships with China, Russia and Turkey offer alternatives to American hegemony. The acquisition of advanced military technology from China, for instance, mitigates the impact of restrictions on Western defense supplies. Moreover, the establishment of economic corridors and trade agreements with these nations could bolster Pakistan’s resilience against economic coercion. A multifaceted approach is necessary to navigate this new reality. Pakistan’s economic integration with the Belt and Road Initiative needs to be accelerated, with its geographical position as a conduit for regional trade being leveraged. Militarily, enhancing local defense capabilities and diversifying arms suppliers will lessen reliance on Western systems. Diplomatically, Pakistan must form alliances within the Muslim world to counteract the influence of US-aligned countries. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) might serve as a forum for expressing collective complaints and forging a unified front. Internally, the government must address the root causes of political instability and economic vulnerability. This entails combating corruption, enhancing governance, and cultivating national unity to withstand external pressures. These sanctions have consequences that extend beyond the immediate economic constraints. This indicates an attempt to isolate Pakistan diplomatically and economically, similar to the tactics utilized against Iran and North Korea. Yet, history demonstrates that isolation often breeds resilience. Pakistan’s robust agricultural base, burgeoning tech sector, and strategic alliances provide a foundation for self-reliance. The country’s youth, comprising a significant portion of the population, represents an untapped potential for innovation and entrepreneurship. By investing in education, technology, and infrastructure, Pakistan can transform these challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth. The sanctions, instead of hindering the nation, could serve as a driving force for essential reform and diversification. Pakistan’s Public, all political parties across the board, and Military establishment are standing firm behind Pakistan’s military program. The U.S. sanctions on Pakistan’s ballistic missile program reflect a broader agenda to curtail the rise of independent Muslim states capable of challenging Western dominance. US has infact never supported Pakistan’s nuclear program or missile technology, although India already has advanced missile systems but US supported them, shows Washington’s hypocrisy While these measures aim to destabilize Pakistan, they also highlight the limitations of traditional power structures in a rapidly evolving world. Pakistan’s response must be both pragmatic and visionary, leveraging its strategic partnerships and internal strengths to chart a path of resilience and self-sufficiency. The era of Western hegemony is coming to an end, and the future belongs to those who can adjust to the multipolar dynamics of the 21st century. So called Sanctions like these will not hurt Pakistan, instead it affirms that US will betray any of its partners when its interests are fulfilled (Pakistan has been a long standing partner of US on war against terror since 1980s). Pakistan has an opportunity to overcome adversity and redefine its position on the global stage, not as a subordinate state but as a sovereign power shaping its future. AAR to announce second quarter fiscal year 2025 results on January 7, 202542 Norway Savings Bank employees have served at bank for over 20 years NORWAY — For Debbie Ward, the name “Norway Savings Bank” has elicited warm feelings since kindergarten. “When I was a child, NSB had a school savings program where you could open an account and a person collected deposits each week. Our bus driver at school also worked for the bank collecting the children’s deposits. It was wonderful.” When she arrived as a teller at NSB in 1981, she discovered the caring, kindhearted reputation of the bank that she had encountered as a youth was well earned and so meaningful that she never left. “I’ve been a teller, teller supervisor, customer service representative, the first ‘branch manager’ in the Norway office, training coordinator, training manager, and regional operations officer before my current role,” said Ward, who is now regional retail banking manager RVP. One year to the day after Ward started her professional relationship with NSB, Deb McPhail began her career in banking at Coastal Savings Bank which, ultimately, was acquired by NSB. “For some reason, they kept me in their employ,” said McPhail, with her trademark delivery of collegial humor. Now, 42 years later, it’s still looked upon as a great decision for Norway Savings and the start of a fulfilling journey for McPhail, who began as a part-time teller in Freeport, worked as an assistant branch manager and branch manager in several communities, and now serves as SVP, senior deposit operations & BSA officer as well as a member of the senior leadership team at NSB. “My career path kept moving. I was never bored and each role I took on challenged me,” she said. “After the merger/acquisition, the fact that they retained me, I found myself in a very unique position and was able to make some really great connections with a lot of great people.” Michele Stevens began as a teller and is now a deposit operations representative II in Norway. She celebrated her 40 th year at NSB in April. “Watching NSB grow from seven branches to 24 branches was a little scary and exciting at the same time,” said Stevens, who grew up in Norway and first worked at two other local banks before arriving at NSB in 1984. Growth and encouragement from leaders to advance and excel are common threads among the 42 Norway Savings Bank team members who have worked at the bank for over 20 years. It’s an amazing statistic that is easier to understand when you study the NSB culture that has both earned their loyalty and been defined from within. “The culture is very positive. It’s team-oriented and growth-oriented,” said Sandy Smith, who arrived at NSB in 1988, first as a receptionist and now a mortgage loan closer. “With hard work, commitment, and the ability to add laughter and fun, the culture is who we are,” said McPhail, who has played a key role in many culture initiatives over the years. “The accessibility to management, the open doors where you can stop in and speak with the president if you are walking by, or the ability to go out into the community and volunteer isn’t a ‘must’ at other banks or other types of companies.” “The culture certainly seems special,” said Ward. “We are one big family. The commitment to each other, our customers, and the communities we serve provide an amazing NSB culture. I enjoy going to the grocery store and seeing so many of my customers and answering any questions they may have while they shop. Lots of changes during my time, but all have been welcome and knowing that the bank needed to change with the times.” The longtime team members have in large part “seen it all” in banking. They describe a lot less paper now and technology gradually replacing tasks like manually adding checks twice and counting cash and coins for long lines of people that stretched out the door. Plus, the arrival of now commonplace services like ATMs, direct deposit, online banking, and debit cards have made the branch lines shorter and banking easier for customers. Through all of the changes and progress, the longevity for so many NSB team members from different backgrounds and places can perhaps be explained by the satisfaction of carrying out the purpose that’s driven the bank since its inception in 1866: to enrich the lives of customers, communities, and colleagues. “What I have enjoyed most is the people,” said Ward. “The employees that I have worked with and developed great friendships with, even after their retirements, and I continue to connect with as much as I can, and the customers who have been devoted to Norway Savings Bank and helping them with their financial decisions and paths throughout their various life stages. I have enjoyed my career and I don’t regret one day of my 43 years here.” “We achieve high standards and goals, not by looking to be the biggest, but through our commitment to our employees, customers, and communities,” said McPhail. “NSB can’t be all things to everyone, but what we are is a bank that serves its clientele with the best of who we are.” Founded in 1866, Norway Savings Bank is a leading mutual banking and financial services company headquartered in Norway, Maine. As of September 30, 2024, Norway Savings Bank had $1.981 billion in total assets; 24 branch locations; and divisions in trust and investment services, personal banking, and business banking. It has received an “Outstanding” rating for three consecutive Community Reinvestment Act Exams from the FDIC. Norway Savings has also received the Best Place for Working Parents designation in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and was recognized with the “Best Wellness Employer – Gold Certification” for the sixth year in a row by Wellness Workdays. BauerFinancial has designated the Bank the “Best of Bauer” for earning and maintaining its highest 5-star rating for 34 continuous years. For more information, visit www.norwaysavings.bank . Bill Ackman: Here's Why I'm 'Very Bullish On America'Thickness of color coated plate and how to pick the color of color coated coil 12-23-2024 08:30 PM CET | Industry, Real Estate & Construction Press release from: ABNewswire Color coated plate [ https://www.ehongsteel.com/ppgippgl-color-coated-steel-coil-factory-manufacture-color-coated-prepainted-steel-coil-product/ ] PPGI/PPGL is a combination of steel plate and paint, so is its thickness based on the thickness of the steel plate or on the thickness of the finished product?First of all, let's understand the structure of color coated plate for construction: Image: https://www.ehongsteel.com/uploads/PPGI-Layer.jpg (Image source: Internet) There are two ways to express the thickness of PPGI [ https://www.ehongsteel.com/low-price-color-coated-steel-coil-ppgi-ppgl-china-supplier-color-steel-coil-product/]/PPGL [ https://www.ehongsteel.com/ppgippgl-color-coated-steel-coil-factory-manufacture-color-coated-prepainted-steel-coil-product/ ] First, the finished thickness of color coated plateFor example: finished thickness of 0.5mm color coated sheet [ https://www.ehongsteel.com/ppgippgl-color-coated-steel-coil-factory-manufacture-color-coated-prepainted-steel-coil-product/ ], paint film thickness of 25/10 micronsThen we can think of color coated substrate (cold rolled sheet + galvanized layer thickness, chemical conversion layer thickness can be ignored) thickness is 0.465mm.Common 0.4mm, 0.5mm, 0.6mm color coated sheet, that is, the total thickness of the finished product, which is more convenient for us to measure directly. Second, the customer specified requirements of color coated substrate thicknessFor example: the substrate thickness of 0.5mm color coated plate, paint film thickness of 25/10 micronsThen the thickness of the finished product is 0.535mm, if you need to cover the PVC film to protect the board surface, we need to add the thickness of the film, from 30 to 70 microns. Finished product thickness = color coated substrate (cold rolled sheet + galvanized layer) + paint film (top paint + back paint) + PVC filmThe above case difference of 0.035mm, we see that in fact it is a very small gap, but in the use of customer demand should also be very careful. Therefore, when ordering, please inform the demand in detail. Image: https://www.ehongsteel.com/uploads/Ral-Color1.jpg How to select the color of color coated coilColor coated plate coating color selection: the choice of color is mainly to consider the match with the surrounding environment and the user's hobby, but from the point of view of the use of technology, light-colored coatings of pigments to choose a large margin of choice, you can choose superior durability of the inorganic pigments (such as titanium dioxide, etc.), and the coating's thermal reflectivity (reflection coefficient of the dark coatings up to double the summer coating itself is relatively low, which is to extend the life of the coating This is beneficial to the extension of coating life. It concerns a 43-year-old Russian engineer accused of repeatedly violating Russian sanctions, according to Nieuwsuur. He is suspected of stealing items over years, such as microchip documentation from ASML, and also similar confidential paperwork from chip technology company Mapper Lithography. The entry ban was a measure introduced by Asylum and Migration Minister Marjolein Faber, Nieuwsuur reported. Such a ban is rarely imposed and only in the event of a threat to national security. The ministry would not provide an explanation for the reason for the entry ban. The ministry’s media relations team is also severely understaffed. The stolen information is alleged to have helped Russian microchip production, and other related sectors. In return, the man is suspected of receiving tens of thousands of euros. The man must appear in court in Rotterdam on Monday for a status hearing in his criminal case. The three-judge district court panel will also have an opportunity to consider aspects of the case, and whether he should be kept in pre-trial detention.

The Irish Times view on not entering government: a rational calculationIt didn’t take much to stir Jack Eichel’s national pride in looking ahead to representing the United States at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. Appearing on a Team USA Zoom call on Thursday, the Vegas Golden Knights forward jumped right in when reminded how U.S. teams featuring NHL players competing in best-on-best international tournaments haven’t won a gold medal since the 1996 World Cup of Hockey series. “I’ll take it,” Eichel interjected after Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy apologized for not hearing the question. “I think there’s a lot to prove for us as USA Hockey,” Eichel said. “I think for a while it was Canada on a pedestal by themselves. And I think for us, we feel like we’ve closed that gap. And I think this is a great opportunity to prove that.” From the Boston area, Eichel supported his case by referring to the growing pool of American talent that’s entered the NHL though the U.S. national development program over the past decade. And that’s reflected in how a majority of the U.S. team’s 23-player roster is made up of USNDP alumni, Eichel included. “Obviously, we feel very confident in our group and the names on our roster,” Eichel said. “But that’s only half the battle. You’ve got to go out there and do it. And we’re excited for that opportunity.” The 4 Nations Face-Off was unveiled last All-Star Weekend. It splits NHL players from Canada, Finland, Sweden and the U.S. into four teams, replacing the All-Star Game format this season. Eichel’s comments came a day after the nations unveiled their entire rosters to compete in the NHL/NHL Players’ Association-backed tournament being split between Montreal and Boston and running from Feb. 12-20. Though talented, the Americans have lacked success at the senior international level. The U.S. last medaled at the world championships by winning bronze in 2021, and hasn’t placed better than third since 1960 at Squaw Valley, which also doubled as the Winter Games. The Americans’ last Olympic gold came with amateurs competing at the 1980 Lake Placid Games, since dubbed the “Miracle On Ice,” while winning silver medals with NHL players in 2002 and 2010 — both times losing to Canada. And then there was 1996, when goalie Mike Richter earned World Cup MVP honors in helping the Americans beat Canada in a decisive Game 3 of the final series. “I think we check every box there is,” McAvoy said. “I think the confidence amongst us in our group should be sky high.” The U.S. team’s brain trust, headed by Wild GM Bill Guerin and Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, prioritized experience over potential in filling out the 17 remaining roster spots. Forwards Chris Kreider, of the Rangers, and Brock Nelson, of the Islanders, are the oldest players on the team at age 33, and have extensive world championships experience. The youngest player is also the only one with Olympic experience: 22-year-old Minnesota defenseman Brock Faber, who played at the Beijing Games in 2022 when the NHL pulled out because of pandemic-related scheduling issues. They’ll go up against a talent-laden Team Canada that features forwards Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon and defenseman Cale Makar. The U.S. team is particularly strong down the middle with Eichel, Auston Matthews and Dylan Larkin. Another strength is in net with a trio led by two-time Vezina Trophy-winner Connor Hellebuyck and rounded out by Jake Oettinger and Jeremy Swayman. USA Hockey has enjoyed its most success in winning two of the past four world junior championships and six since 2004. Four Nations teammates McAvoy, Oettinger and defenseman Adam Fox were members of the U.S. team that won the 2017 world junior title. Team Canada officials also went with a veteran-laden group, featuring 14 players who have won at least one Stanley Cup title. “You can’t put a price tag on experience,” Canada and Lightning coach Jon Cooper said Thursday. “I truly believe this is a tournament where you’re basically playing three Game 7s (in the preliminary round). ... There’s no real margin for error,” he added. “This is as competitive a group as you will find. Every one of these players will lay in traffic for their country.”( MENAFN - EIN Presswire) WILMINGTON, NEW CASTLE, DE, UNITED STATES, December 24, 2024 /EINPresswire / -- According to a recent report published by Allied market Research, titled,“PLM in Discrete manufacturing Market By Component, Deployment Model, Enterprise Size and industry Vertical: Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2021–2028,” The global PLM in discrete manufacturing market size was valued at $19.94 billion in 2020, and is projected to reach $33.24 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 6.8% from 2021 to 2028.
