Jimmy Carter, 39th US president, Nobel winner, dies at 100AP News Summary at 3:32 p.m. EST
Logistical issues meant that thousands of Namibians were still waiting to vote in pivotal presidential and legislative elections late on Wednesday as the polling stations were scheduled to close. The vote could usher in the desert nation's first woman leader even as her party, the ruling South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) faces the strongest challenge yet to its 34-year grip on power. Some voters told AFP they queued all day, for up to 12 hours, blaming technical problems which included issues with voter identification tablets or insufficient ballot papers. According to Namibia's electoral law, those in the queue before the polls closed -- scheduled at 9:00 pm (1900 GMT) -- should be allowed to vote. "We have the obligation to make sure that they pass their vote," said Petrus Shaama, chief officer of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN). The main opposition party, the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) has blamed the ECN for the long lines and cried foul play. "We have reason to believe that the ECN is deliberately suppressing voters and deliberately trying to frustrate voters from casting their vote," said Christine Aochamus of the IPC. She said the party had "started the process" of approaching a court "to order the ECN to extend the voting time". At one polling station inside Namibia's University of Science and Technology in the capital Windhoek, hundreds of people were still in line at 09:00 pm despite some having arrived at 6:00 am, an hour before polls opened. It was a similar situation at the Museum of Independence, according to an AFP reporter, where one voter said he arrived 12 hours earlier and was still in line with hundreds of others. - Unemployment - SWAPO's candidate and current vice president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, was one of the first to vote and called on Namibians "to come out in their numbers". An estimated 1.5 million people in the sparsely populated nation had registered to cast their ballot. SWAPO has governed since leading mineral-rich Namibia to independence from South Africa in 1990 but complaints about unemployment and enduring inequalities could force Nandi-Ndaitwah into an unprecedented second round. Leader of the IPC, Panduleni Itula, a former dentist and lawyer said he was optimistic he could "unseat the revolutionary movement". "We will all march from there and to a new dawn and a new era of how we conduct our public affairs in this country," the 67-year-old told reporters after voting. Itula took 29 percent of votes in the 2019 elections, losing to SWAPO leader Hage Geingob with 56 percent. It was a remarkable performance considering Geingob, who died in February, had won almost 87 percent five years before that. Namibia is a major uranium and diamond exporter but not many of its nearly three million people have benefitted from that wealth. "There's a lot of mining activity that goes on in the country, but it doesn't really translate into improved infrastructure, job opportunities," said independent political analyst Marisa Lourenco, based in Johannesburg. "That's where a lot of the frustration is coming from, (especially) the youth," she said. Unemployment among 15- to 34-year-olds is estimated at 46 percent, according to the latest figures from 2018, almost triple the national average. - Second round - For the first time in Namibia's recent history, analysts say a second round is a somewhat realistic option. That would take place within 60 days of the announcement of the first round of results due by Saturday. "The outcome will be tight," said self-employed Hendry Amupanda, 32, who queued since 9:00 pm the night before to cast his ballot. "I want the country to get better and people to get jobs," said Amupanda, wearing slippers and equipped with a chair, blanket and snacks. Marvyn Pescha, a self-employed consultant, said his father was part of SWAPO's liberation struggle and he was not going to abandon the party. "But I want SWAPO to be challenged for better policies. Some opportunistic leaders have tarnished the reputation of the party, they misuse it for self-enrichment," the 50-year-old said. While lauded for leading Namibia to independence, SWAPO is nervous about its standing after other liberation-era movements in the region have lost favour with young voters. In the past six months, South Africa's African National Congress lost its parliamentary majority and the Botswana Democratic Party was ousted after almost six decades in power. clv/br/lhd/sbkJimmy Carter, former US president, dies at 100Week 12 TNF: Steelers-Browns Preview, Props & PredictionBitcoin hit a record high above $100,000 on Thursday as the election of Republican Donald Trump as U.S. president fuels expectations that his administration will usher in a friendly regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies. Essentially, funds now need to either get involved or risk standing on the sidelines while more gutsy competitors potentially outperform." Bobby Ong, cofounder, Coingecko, Kuala Lumpur: "Bitcoin reaching the $100,000 milestone marks a significant moment for the cryptocurrency market , reflecting its growing maturity and mainstream adoption. "The psychological importance of $100,000 is also attracting new investors and driving market sentiment. This rally demonstrates Bitcoin's position as a leading financial innovation, solidifying its reputation as a digital store of value and a hedge against traditional economic uncertainties. "It also underscores the growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a legitimate asset class." Shane Oliver, chief economist and head of investment strategy, AMP, Sydney: "As time goes by it's proving itself as part of the financial landscape, slotting in more as a store of value as opposed to a regular asset you can value on the basis of things it produces, like shares. Ray Attrill, head of Fx Research "It's the ultimate speculative asset, isn't it. "I wasn't surprised ... it was probably the cleanest 'Trump trade'. Just from a regulatory point of view and the concept of a much more easily traded asset, it's justified its run up, though it's now taken on a life of its own. "The test will be if we do have a big puke in risk sentiment at some point, and we start to see a major stock market correction. Where does crypto sit in that? I don't know the answer." RICHARD TENG, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, BINANCE, DUBAI: "Almost 16 years since its first block was mined in 2009, bitcoin has reached the landmark milestone of $100K per coin, placing the asset at a total market capitalisation of $2.1 trillion. "This also places bitcoin firmly on the very short list of just seven assets or companies that have achieved more than 2 trillion dollars in market capitalisation, the rest being gold and tech giants NVIDIA, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), and Amazon. "With talks of a U.S. Strategic Bitcoin reserve and more companies adding bitcoin to their corporate treasuries, we are on the precipice of true mainstream global adoption." Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux , CEO, Bitstamp, Luxembourg: "Bitcoin reaching $100,000 is a watershed moment, highlighting its resilience after a challenging few years. Despite shifts in the political and regulatory landscape, bitcoin has proven its staying power. "This milestone reflects the growing maturity of the crypto market, as traditional financial institutions and retail customers increasingly embrace digital assets. Looking ahead, we anticipate broader integration of crypto into retail, professional and institutional holdings and pensions, coupled with a more diverse range of trading services and instruments, mirroring the evolution of traditional finance."

Kmart has unveiled its entire Christmas collection – and there’s one $15 item shoppers have already declared a cult buy due to its likeness to an expensive brand. The budget retailer hosted a “Merry Market” in Melbourne on Wednesday to show off its huge festive product range which spans across toys, homewares, decorations, fashion and beauty. There are thousands of affordable items on offer, including a set of novelty pyjamas for all the family that has been “flying off shelves”, in a bid to help make sure that even the most budget-conscious Aussies among us can have a special Christmas, Kmart said. Rennie Freer, the Australian retailer’s general manager – marketing, told news.com.au Kmart was committed to keeping prices low amid the current cost of living crisis. “Because we own everything, right from design down to sourcing in the supply chain, we can keep costs low. It’s an amazing business model that has never been as important as it is now,” she said. Research shows that previously comfortable Australians are now struggling to pay rent, transport, food, childcare and education, with 22 per cent of Australians significantly struggling, according to the Nature Cost of Living Survey . This means there will be more than 760,000 Australians affected by poverty this Christmas, data suggests. Kmart said its new mini kitchen appliances were ‘proving very popular’. Picture: news.com.au This beauty advent calendar was described as a ‘winning product Kmart has never done before’. Picture: news.com.au ‘Winning product Kmart has never done before’ Kmart said its commitment to “low prices” was a huge driving force behind its mammoth festive range, which hit shelves across the country last month. “We’re already seeing many of the limited-time products go viral, which I think shows the consumer need for affordable items that suit every need,” Ms Freer said. “The mini kitchen appliances are proving very popular, the beautiful gingerbread maker and the waffle maker, both of which I personally love, they’re awesome. “The OXX Cosmetics Summer Solstice 12 Days of Christmas Advent Calendar is an absolute winner. It contains all of our cult beauty products and is an item we’ve never done before at Kmart.” The retailer’s Christmas 2024 collection hit stores in October. As another said. “It looks so expensive.” While one simply said: “Stunning.” This festive candle has been described as a ‘dupe’ of a popular Australian brand.
