Last week, the 40th anniversary “Ultimate Mix” of the song, an oddly moving but rather strange mash-up of three previous versions, featuring digitally enhanced duets between George Michael and Robbie Williams and three generations of Bono, was released – this time amid a fierce debate over its lyrics, messaging, and reductive portrayal of a primitive, homogenous “Africa”.
