The wide-eyed girls burst into spontaneous giggles, even as the unfamiliar, yet friendly voice of ‘Alexa’, captivated their attention,” recalls G. Sravya, Training and Content Associate at Quest Alliance, a non-profit trust roped in by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the school curriculum. To equip young learners for the digital future, the students of Classes 7 to 9 will soon learn about AI as a part of their curriculum. Watching the Amazon’s cloud-based voice service, Alexa, respond to their curious queries, some of the students, after an initial pause and hesitation, screamed, “It listens to us and it talks back.” Ms. Sravya was recounting the students’ brush with the latest technology at one of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Srikakulam district. The initiative was a part of a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Samagra Shiksha, Quest Alliance, and Leadership for Equity (LFE), under Amazon’s Future Engineer Programme (AFE), in February, 2024. The AI curriculum is being piloted this year in around 100 KGBVs and Andhra Pradesh Model Schools (APMS) in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts. “In these three years, our role is to ensure that the students’ understanding of AI deepens through foundational knowledge and hands-on experience, and prepare the young learners for future tech-driven careers,” said Sameera, Andhra Pradesh State Lead for Quest Alliance. Most students in KGBVs come from marginalised communities with a rural background. “For students, its the opening of a door to the vast possibilities of technology,” said Srikakulam District Education Officer S. Tirumala Chaitanya. “The initiative is being implemented in 38 schools — 25 KGBVs and 13 Model Schools — in the district,” he said. The Quest Alliance also imparted training to 200 teachers. “The initial amazement and disbelief of the students is gradually transforming into knowledge that AI is the creation of computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence,” said Ms. Sameera, adding that the objective was to make students not only learn the concepts and applications of AI, but also help them build critical thinking and analytical skills to become responsible digital citizens. Mr. Chaitanya said the good thing was that teachers were gaining expertise through AI training, and that the initiative would equip our classrooms with answers to the demands of the 21st century. “The curriculum is designed to develop students’ proficiency in using fundamental AI tools and technologies, while making sure that they also understand the potential risks and iniquities the technology operates with,” said Ms. Sameera, explaining that to encourage creativity, the programme allows students to explore AI applications in various projects, fostering creative expression through technology. The annual curriculum is collaboratively being tested and co-developed with educators from government schools. “Their expertise ensures the curriculum is contextualised and tailored to local needs, creating a grounded and culturally relevant AI programme,” explained Ms. Sameera. The Director General of Media and Communication to Governor Abba Yusuf, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, has narrated how he took refuge in the Kano State Government House to avoid being arrested by security operatives. Making this known while delivering an address at the PR Nigeria Young Communication Fellowship in Kano, he claimed that at least 40 officers of the Inspector General of Police monitoring team were deployed to Kano to arrest him about six days ago. He however stated that he remained in the government house because of the constitutional immunity that disallows arrest on the premises except with the governor’s express instruction. Tofa explained that he had a court order restricting the police from arresting him which was why he attended the event which he could not miss, adding that he was fortified against being arrested. “For the last five days, I have been in the government house and could not come out. The nature of Kano politics is so much that there is a fight that you can even say is a federal versus state fight. And at some point, I have almost been behind almost everything of that nature. According to him,” There was this petition against me and nobody is handling the petition but the IGP himself. He deployed the 40 IG monitoring team squad to Kano since Sunday with the sole aim of arresting me. “I have gotten a court order which has not been served to the police but is viral, so I’m sure they must have seen it. And then the third one is that I came here well fortified to resist arrest if it happens. While addressing the fellows, he advised them on the importance of mentorship as well as the benefits. “So gentlemen, I will say media, communication, journalism, PR, is a very noble profession. You don’t need to be a graduate of mass communication to venture into it as much as you can get professional training and a mentor. He therefore disclosed that ” In my entire life, I believed so much in maintaining a mentor. In the last 24 years, whatever I take as a decision to do in my life, I search for a mentor for that particular thing. In some areas, I get mentor 1, mentor 2 and mentor 3. Mentor 1,2,3 will give you an option. If you are so confused about something you can gather the three opinions and evaluate them and then pick the best that suits you” he advised. Addressing newsmen the chief executive of PR Nigeria, Yusha’ Shu’aib said the program was initiated to nurture and mentor a new generation of communicators and equip them with the skills and tools to communicate. “In the past people always thought about basic skills in communication but now with the advent of technology, we realize that the issue has to do with fact-checking. “Therefore Artificial Intelligence and social media are very vital in communication these days” he stated.
