But Venice’s prolific offense erupted for three touchdowns and a field goal in the final 4:33 of the second period and coasted from there in a 52-19 victory at Pitbull Stadium in Miami. It was the eighth time Venice (14-1) surpassed 50 points this season. The Indians averaged 49.9 points and lost only to nationally ranked independent IMG Academy. Lake Mary, which reached the final four for the first time in program history, closed at 12-3 with its 10-game winning streak snapped. The Rams’ scores were on touchdown passes by junior quarterback Noah Grubbs. He connected with Chase Hinshaw for TDs of 4 and 14 yards, and threw to Tyree Weatherspoon for a late 32-yard score but also had two first-half interceptions. Lake Mary was attempting to become the first Orlando area team to win a state football final since Sanford Seminole won the large-class championship in 2020. The title is the fourth since 2000 for Venice, which lost a 60-48 championship game against Lakeland last season. Venice beat Apopka 35-7 for a 2021 championship and also won titles in 2000 and 2017 under coach John Peacock.
A victim of an elaborate online romance fraud has told BBC Scotland that she was completely convinced by deepfake videos used to scam her out of £17,000. Nikki MacLeod, 77, sent gift cards and made bank and Paypal transfers believing she was sending money to a real woman she was in an online relationship with. She said she was initially sceptical but felt reassured by video messages from the person, which she now knows were fake. She wants to warn others about the increasing use of AI technology by scammers. Nikki got in touch with BBC Radio Scotland's Morning Programme during the BBC's Scam Safe week last month. The retired lecturer from Edinburgh said: "I am not a stupid person but she was able to convince me that she was a real person and we were going to spend our lives together." The 77-year-old said she was lonely after losing her parents during lockdown and the end of a long-term relationship. She started speaking to people online and met the person she knows as Alla Morgan in a chat group. She was told this person was working on an oil rig in the North Sea and was asked to buy Steam gift cards to allow them to keep talking. These cards are typically used for buying video games. The person Nikki was chatting to told her she needed them to allow her to get an internet connection on the rig so that they could keep talking. Nikki said she was sceptical, but was persuaded to buy several hundred pounds worth of the cards. She repeatedly asked Alla Morgan for a live video call which was refused, or didn't work. It was then that she started receiving recorded video messages. "I had started to think, are you a real person?" Nikki said. "Then she sent me a video to say 'Hi Nikki, I am not a scammer, I am on my oil rig', and I was totally convinced by it. "A few weeks later she sent me another video, also on the oil rig with bad weather in the background. This was before she started asking me for all this money. " The images and video sent to Nikki were created using AI technology. There is no way of knowing where the image of the woman - Alla Morgan - came from. It could have been made using the face of a real person with no connection to the scammers and no idea that their identity was used. Nikki said documents, images and videos she was sent were enough to convince her to part with her cash. "She (Alla Morgan) said she was going to come and visit me and asked could I pay for her vacation from the oil rig to come to Scotland," Nikki said. Nikki was the sent details of a company Alla supposedly worked for and contacted by someone in their HR department who asked for money to pay for a helicopter. "She said she would pay me back, so I gave them $2,500," Nikki said. The scam finally came to light when Nikki was attempting to make another payment to a bank account, supposedly belonging to Alla Morgan, and her own bank informed her she was a victim of fraud. Police Scotland confirmed they are investigating the matter. BBC Scotland asked Dr Lynsay Shepherd, an expert in cybersecurity and human-computer interaction at Abertay University, to take a look at the video messages Nikki was sent. She said: "At first glance it looks legitimate, if you don't know what to look for, but if you look at the eyes – the eye movements aren't quite right. "There are a number of apps out there, even something as simple as a face swap app or filters, that can do this. You can sometimes see when people are talking, when you look around the jawline, the filter kind of slips a bit. "It is relatively straightforward to do." Dr Shepherd said online scammers often claim to be in a location where meeting face-to-face or even a live video call are not possible. "Oil rigs is one of the common ones - in the military on base, a doctor overseas - and then typically they build up that relationship and then say 'there has been an emergency, I need some money for travel'." Nikki said she sent around £17,000 in total to the scammers. Her bank and PayPal have been able to get around £7,000 of that money back, but she was persuaded by the scammers to send some of the money as personal payments - through the friends and family function on PayPal. This has not been recovered. PayPal said they do not cover personal payments under PayPal Buyer Protection. In a statement a spokesman added said: "We're very sorry to hear this has happened to Ms MacLeod. Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud, which includes romance scams, is a threat that has grown across the industry." He urged PayPal users to be wary of "unusual payment requests" and added "always question uninvited approaches in case it's a scam." On their website, Steam warn of increasing reports of scammers coercing victims to purchase Steam wallet gift cards. The company said people should never give out a steam wallet gift card to a person they do not know." Police Scotland said an investigation is under way after the fraud was reported in October and inquiries are ongoing. A spokeswoman added: "We would ask people to be vigilant and encourage anyone who believes they may have been victim to fraud or a scam to contact police on 101." Nikki told us the scammers are continuing to contact her, most recently sending her a newspaper article, claiming Alla Morgan is now in a Turkish jail and needs more money. She wants others to learn from her experience. "These scammers don't have any empathy at all. It's their job and they are very good at it," she said. "The documents looked real, the videos looked real, the bank looked real. "With the introduction of artificial intelligence, every single thing can be fake."One moment you’re a top-rated catching prospect for the Boston Red Sox, a storied franchise with an historic ballpark and nine World Series titles to boast, most recently in 2018. The next you’re still that prized prospect but with Sox of a different color, with a franchise that set a record for futility last season and hasn’t won a postseason series since the 2005 World Series. That was 22-year-old catcher Ryan Teel on Wednesday when he received word he and three other Red Sox prospects were traded to the White Sox for Garrett Crochet. Teel was driving, on his way to for a training session. “I definitely didn’t see it coming at all,” Teel said on a Zoom call Friday, two days after letting the shock set in. “Completely, completely surprised. The emotion I felt was surprise at first but then excited as it settled in. And ready to go.” Teel, the Red Sox’ fourth-ranked prospect and MLB Pipeline’s third-ranked catching prospect, was the headliner in Boston’s package that reeled in Crochet, a prized All-star left-hander with two years of affordable contract control remaining. Teel said he is “excited” about the possibility of a faster track to the majors in Chicago. A skilled pitch blocker and accurate thrower, his left-handed bat should play well at the Sox’ home ballpark. Korey Lee is the incumbent at catcher and while sound defensively, he batted .178/.206/.317 with six homers after June 19. Teel, meanwhile, was hitting a combined .288/.386/.433 with an .819 OPS, 13 homers and 12 stolen bases in 505 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A. Edgar Quero, ranked ninth among catching prospects, gives the Sox the best minor league tandem at a premium position. Quero posted an .839 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A but Teel looks to be the better defender. In any case, it’s a promising young pairing. “Catching is gold right now in this game,” Sox general manager Chris Getz said. “You’ve got a switch-hitter in Edgar Quero, who’s really strong from the right side currently. And you’ve got Kyle Teel, who’s left-handed and has versatility [outfield] in his background, too. The catching position is just so valuable, and it’s such a hard position to fill. To have two guys like that and a Korey Lee -- going back to the foundation of an organization, so many things start up the middle of the diamond, and it starts at the catching position and how much they can impact the game with game-planning and directing traffic on the field. So to have strength there is really important to us.” The Red Sox drafted the 6-0, 190-pound Teel 14 th in 2023 out of Virginia, where he won the Buster Posey Award as college baseball’s top catcher. “I love the game, I love to get better,” Teel said. “I’m very obsessed with getting better. It’s just ingrained in me. At the field, I’m talking to coaches and talking to players. I love talking the game. I love getting to know guys, personalities. So I would say it’s a combination of loving the game, loving the people around me and just making the most of my time wherever I’m at.”
Saturday, December 14, 2024 Houston Airports is excited to announce the opening of its new International Arrivals Curb , set to debut at 5 a.m. on Saturday, December 14 , at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) . This newly designed pick-up area marks a major step forward in improving traffic flow and elevating the passenger experience, addressing previous challenges that have caused congestion and negative attention. For nearly two years, passengers and visitors have faced crowded and chaotic conditions at the temporary pick-up zone near Terminal E on South Terminal Road. This makeshift curb was necessary to allow for ongoing construction of the $1.458 billion International Terminal project, a crucial upgrade to the airport’s infrastructure. The new International Arrivals Curb is designed with efficiency and safety in mind, featuring eight dedicated pick-up lanes . The expanded capacity and modern design will streamline traffic and provide a smoother experience for those arriving at IAH. Six of the eight lanes will be available in time for the busy December holiday travel season , with the remaining two lanes scheduled to open in January 2025 . In addition, the closure of the temporary Terminal E pick-up zone will restore the airport’s exit to its original four-lane configuration , effectively eliminating the traffic bottleneck that has plagued the area since January 2022. This long-awaited improvement is expected to significantly reduce congestion, ensuring a smoother transition for travelers arriving and departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport. As Houston Airports continues to grow and evolve, this development represents a critical investment in the region’s transportation infrastructure, enhancing both the airport’s functionality and its service to the community. “The bane of our existence—the temporary Terminal E arrivals curb—will finally close on December 14,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “With the opening of the new International Arrivals Curb, we’ve listened to feedback, addressed frustrations and delivered a safer, more streamlined solution. This marks a new chapter in how we serve our passengers, fulfilling our commitment to providing a world-class experience while laying the groundwork for the future of international travel in Houston.” Navigating the New IAH International Arrivals Curb Drivers arriving at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) can easily access the new International Arrivals Curb by following clear signage along North Terminal Road . Directional signs will guide vehicles toward Terminals C/DE , where drivers will be directed left onto a dedicated lane, separated from other traffic by a barrier. This lane will lead vehicles directly to the new pick-up area for Terminal E International Arrivals . Once on the curb, Houston Airports Landside Agents and law enforcement personnel will assist drivers, directing them to the appropriate pick-up zones based on their vehicle type—whether for private vehicles , taxis , or ride-share services . For passengers clearing U.S. Customs and Border Protection , the process is simple. After exiting the customs area, travelers will proceed to the International Arrivals ‘Meet and Greet’ zone, where they will follow a newly established hallway leading directly to the International Arrivals Curb . Airport personnel will be on hand to guide passengers to their designated pick-up points. Once at the curb, passengers can order their ride-share through their app, hail a taxi at the designated stand, or notify their friends or family to pick them up. This streamlined system ensures a smoother and more efficient process for all arriving passengers. Houston Airports Celebrates New Curb with Special “International” Guest In a unique celebration of its new International Arrivals Curb , Houston Airports , in collaboration with Intuitive Machines , welcomed a very special guest on Thursday, December 12: the Moon RACER . This lunar rover, developed at the Houston Spaceport , took a test drive on the new curb in a fun and symbolic demonstration. The Moon RACER is a finalist for a NASA contract under the Artemis program , which aims to return astronauts to the moon by 2028 . This exciting milestone highlights both Houston’s contributions to space exploration and the city’s ongoing commitment to innovation and infrastructure development. The test drive marked a celebratory moment for the airport and its partners as they continue to enhance the passenger experience while showcasing Houston’s leadership in space technology. “Houston’s identity as Space City is built on a foundation of innovation, connectivity and bold ambitions,” said Jack Fischer, VP of Intuitive Machines and retired NASA astronaut. “As Intuitive Machines competes in humankind’s next space race, having seamless global connections is critical for our team and the growing network of aerospace companies in Houston. This terminal is more than an infrastructure project; it’s a gateway to the future of exploration, innovation and discovery.” Why the Moon RACER? When George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) first opened its doors in June 1969 , it offered only a few international destinations, coinciding with the historic moment when man was about to land on the moon. Now, 55 years later , the airport is preparing to unveil its new international terminal, set to offer nonstop flights to 195 destinations across five continents . The Moon RACER symbolizes this full-circle moment. Developed by Intuitive Machines , it represents the next frontier in space exploration—just as IAH is expanding its global reach. While Bush Airport connects travelers to the world, Intuitive Machines is developing the technology to send humans back to the moon, paving the way for lunar exploration and the future of space travel. The collaboration between space and aviation underscores Houston’s pivotal role in both industries.NBC Sports makes its first foray into doing an NFL alternate broadcast on Saturday when it puts the matchup between the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs into the realm of the Madden video game universe. The Madden altcast will be streamed on Peacock with the main broadcast airing on NBC, beginning at 1 p.m. EST. It is the first time NBC has done an alternate broadcast of an NFL game. CBS has done at least one game on Nickelodeon since the 2020 season, while ESPN/ABC have the “ManningCast” as well as animated presentations featuring “ The Simpsons ” and “ Toy Story .” Amazon Prime Video also has “Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats” during “Thursday Night Football.” “It’s ironic that you want to make the video game as much as actual live play as possible and now you are doing the opposite of trying to make the real game look like the video game,” said Josh Helmrich, the NFL's senior director of media and Next Gen Stats. The altcast on Peacock will blend video game elements — such as Madden 25 graphics, route trees, player cards, button icons on eligible receivers and player ratings — with live action. GenuisIQ will provide real-time data via the league’s Next Gen Stats. There will also be times when animations from the video game — such as touchdown celebrations — will be used instead of live action. NBC has used the “Sunday Night Football” games the last two weeks as test broadcasts to make sure all the technology was working as well as build cohesion in the studio in Stamford, Connecticut, with the announcers doing the game. Paul Burmeister will handle the play-by-play with Madden NFL expert Kurt Benkert and six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Ochocinco providing commentary. Ochocinco will serve as a real-time player “ratings adjuster.” Henry Leverette, who won the Ultimate Madden Bowl championship ring in February, will also be part of the broadcast. Burmeister noted earlier this week that there will be more hard core football schematic chess match talk on the altcast compared to what might happen on a traditional football broadcast. Story continues below video “I’m really excited to toe that line and weave this in to show how much parallel the game has to the real game itself,” Benkert said. “I think will resonate really well with the younger audience and with people that are used to seeing it in the video game that way.” While the Madden video game is known for the high camera view above the quarterback, that will be used only for replays or to show formations before plays. The traditional sideline camera will be used the most since that better shows route trees and other features most associated with the game. In an added twist, Ochocinco will be able to adjust a player's rating depending on what happens during the game. The Texans (9-5) have clinched the AFC South while the AFC West champion Chiefs (13-1) are looking to remain the conference's top seed. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce were two of only six players to begin the season with 99 overall ratings in the Madden game. Houston's highest-rated players in Madden are offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil (95) and running back Joe Mixon (93). Eleven players on the Texans and Chiefs rosters have a Madden rating above 90. The Madden altcast also takes on personal meaning for NBC Sports Executive Producer of NFL Fred Gaudelli, who was Madden's producer during the final seven years of his broadcast career. Madden joined ABC's “Monday Night Football” in 2002 before Madden and Gaudelli moved to NBC for the start of “Sunday Night Football” in 2006. “The one thing John held fast is you couldn't put something in the video game that you couldn't do in a real game,” Gaudelli said. “I had some memorable times picking his brain about the advent of the video game and what led him to it. He has been foremost in my mind as we’ve all tried to strategize what this should look like on Saturday.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
Julia Bouwsma, librarian at Webster Library for nearly a decade, spearheads numerous initiatives, including expanded programming, a digital catalog system, and community-focused resources like a 24/7 food pantry. Submitted photo KINGFIELD — For nearly a decade, Julia Bouwsma has directed the Webster Library, transforming it into a vital community hub while also serving as Maine’s Poet Laureate , a role she was appointed to in 2021. Bouwsma is the sixth person to hold the title, following Stuart Kestenbaum, Wesley McNair, Betsy Sholl, Baron Wormser and Kate Barnes. “Webster Library is a small nonprofit with limited resources, but we are always adapting and extremely committed to growing and changing to meet the evolving needs of our community,” Bouwsma said. Under her leadership, the library transitioned from a paper card catalog to a digital system, expanded its operating hours, and introduced enhanced programming for adults and children. A weekly tech-help drop-in program is among its most popular offerings, held Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. “This program is part of the Greater Franklin Digital Literacy Initiative, which is a collaboration between Greater Franklin Economic and Community Development, Franklin County Adult Education and Spruce Mountain Adult Education,” Bouwsma said. “We are delighted to be a host site for this wonderful program and encourage everyone in our community to come visit us for assistance with technology support and skills.” The library is also a valuable resource for homeschool families, offering access to its collection, interlibrary loans and printing services. Bouwsma encouraged homeschool families to reach out directly for support. “We invite any homeschooling families in the Kingfield area to reach out to us directly about your programming or materials needs, and we will do our best to try to accommodate,” she said. For young readers, Hank the therapy dog provides a unique opportunity to practice literacy skills in a judgment-free environment. “Hank is the newest therapy dog to regularly visit Webster Library, but we’ve been offering this program for a few years now,” Bouwsma said. “It’s a great chance for beginning readers to practice their reading skills by reading to a nonjudgmental canine audience [who is also very soft and enjoys getting some pats along with hearing a story].” “Hank visits the library for an hour several times a month,” she continued. “Visits are always announced in the Webster Library Facebook group, and patrons young and old can come to the library and read him a book or just spend a little time with him. Hank is calm and sweet and always eager for some love or a cookie!” The annual Letters to Santa event Dec. 15 brought holiday cheer to families, with activities including holiday stories, crafts and letter writing with a special mailbox connecting to the North Pole. Bouwsma said they provide the materials for writing a letter to Santa, as well as a special mailbox with direct access to the North Pole. seen here Feb. 16 in 2022: Julia Bouwsma, Maine’s Poet Laureate, at Webster Library where she works as the library director, Brianna Soukup/Staff Photographer Bouwsma emphasized the library’s role as a welcoming space for the entire community, particularly during colder months. “Our library is very warm and cozy, has a lovely gas fireplace and we are able to provide games, puzzles, coloring supplies, and coffee/tea,” she said. Residents are welcome to stay as long as they need during the library’s hours. Volunteer efforts are crucial to maintaining the library’s services and upkeep, Bouwsma said, noting the importance of community involvement. “As a small nonprofit library, we love our volunteers and will take all the help we can get; with everything from programming to yard and building maintenance!” she said Currently, the library is seeking donations for its food pantry and preparing for a January calendar raffle fundraiser. “We have some amazing prizes on offer [everything from cash to gift certificates for local restaurants to firewood to water skiing lessons], and we are so grateful for the many businesses and individuals who have donated to make this raffle possible,” Bouwsma said. Looking ahead, the library is developing a strategic plan to guide its growth over the next few years. “As part of this process, we will be offering a survey in the coming weeks to collect community feedback and help us understand how we can best serve our community going forward,” she said. Through her work as Poet Laureate and librarian, Bouwsma continues to enrich the cultural and educational life of Kingfield. “One of the really special things about Maine is its proliferation of small libraries,” she said. “Each one is special and unique and in many ways, they really are the hearts of our small towns.” We invite you to add your comments. The San Gabriel Valley was well represented with seven teams attending, including two that made their second straight trip to the finals luncheon, and one who’s last championship appearance was so long ago its team wore leather helmets the last time it played in a title game. That would be Pasadena, the feel-good story of this year’s group. Pasadena was 0-10 last season and stretched its losing streak to 13 straight before rallying to finish third in the Pacific League, and it did not slow down. Pasadena routed Lynwood 37-0 in Friday’s Division 13 semifinals to reach the championship game for the first time since 1947. Pasadena has won three championships, winning in 1915, which is more than a century ago. They also won in 1924 and 1933. Pasadena (7-6) will host Gahr (7-5) in Saturday’s championship game at 7 p.m. “I think it’s going to be good for the community,” Pasadena coach Ron Jones said of finally making it back to the finals. “It’s surreal that we’re here after all the adversity we went through at the beginning of the season. We never thought we would be in this building.” Bulldogs wide receiver Christopher Solis-Lumar transferred from Glendora, and was added to the team midway through the season following the sit-out period. “It’s a great experience, kind of a bittersweet moment,” Solis-Lumar said. “It took us a while to get here and not a lof of people thought we would get here, and for us to bring it back for the first time since 1947, it’s going to be something.” LA SERNA, RIO HONDO PREP LOOKING TO REPEAT La Serna and Rio Hondo Prep were both at the champions luncheon last year, and both went on to win championships. They get to compete for rare consecutive titles this weekend. La Serna won the Division 4 title and CIF State Division 2-AA championship last season. La Serna graduated several players from last year’s team, but improved over the season and defeated Summit 34-22 in the Division 5 semifinals. La Serna (10-3) will be on the road at Palos Verdes (8-5) playing for their second straight title and fifth overall. “This team was just determined to carve their place in La Serna football history,” La Serna coach Andy George said. “There wasn’t too many high expectations coming off a state championship team. But our team said you know what, we’re going to get after it.” Rio Hondo Prep certainly isn’t a surprise anymore. The small school with less than 75 boys on campus won its 15th sectional title last season beating Santa Monica for the Division 9 title, which was the first single-digit division title in the school’s history, having won most of its titles in eight-man or the old small school’s divisions. Rio Hondo Prep (10-1) is now in Division 7 and beat West Torrance 42-21 in the semifinals. The Kares have a giant task in the finals where it will take on Warren (6-7) in Friday’s championship at Arcadia high school. Warren lost in the Division 3 championship last year, and traditionaly competes in the top divisions. “If you would have told me a year ago we would be playing Warren in a CIF championship game, I would have said you’re crazy,” Rio Hondo Prep coach Mark Carson said. “It’s a great opportunity is how we’re looking at it. If we played them 10 times, they would probably win nine of them. We’re hoping to catch that one.” GLENDORA IN FIRST TITLE GAME SINCE 1989 Glendora has been the comeback team of the playoffs, overcoming big deficits in the quarterfinals and semifials to advance to the Division 6 championship, where the Tartans will be looking for their second sectional title and first since sharing the championship in 1989 with Ramona, a game that ended in a 28-28 tie for the Division 2-A crown. Glendora (9-4), who overcame a 21-3 deficit in the second half to beat Dana Hills 25-21 in the semifinals, will take on Murrietta Mesa (9-4) in Saturday’s Division 6 title game at Citrus College. Glendora offensive lineman Marko Luera talked about how determine the Tartans are to finish it off. “This team is special man,” Luera said. “I love every kid on this team, it’s a team thing. We’re going for it. We keep fighting. We don’t think the game’s over.” EL RANCHO IN FIRST TITLE GAME SINCE 1988 El Rancho (9-4) which has had to play home games at nearby school’s because its stadium is under reconstruction, has not let it distract them, advancing to Friday’s Division 11 championship, where it will be on the road against Irvine Portola (7-6). El Rancho is playing for the school’s fourth championship and first since 1968. The Dons last played in the 1988 finals and lost to Los Altos. El Rancho shared the title with St. Paul in 1968, and when they won it 1966, they were declared mythical national champions. The Dons also won in 1960. “This is remarkable,” El Rancho coach Adrian Medrano said. “Our program is trending in the right direction for a long time. We had a tough 2-8 season last year and a lot of those guys were part of that team and have been productive all year.” SAN GABRIEL, PIONEER IN ALL-AREA FINAL There is one championship that will produce an champion for the area. San Gabriel, which won the Division 13 title in 2022, is back in the finals for the second time in three years. San Gabriel (7-6) will be at Pioneer (8-5) in Saturday’s Division 14 championship game. “It’s amazing, all the freshman that were part of it (championship) the first time and I’m a junior now,” San Gabiel running back/linebacker Louie Navarro said. “I’m still young but now I’m playing a bigger role and it feels amazing. Pioneer is in the championship game for the first time ever. “It means a lot for it to be the first appearance in the whole school history,” Pioneer quarterback Amari Resendiz said of reaching the title game. “We’re going to see the whole community at the game and it’s going to be big.” CIF-SS FINALS SCHEDULE FRIDAY’S GAMES La Serna at Palos Verdes, 7 p.m. DIVISION 7 Warren vs. Rio Hondo Prep at Arcadia HS, 7 p.m. DIVISION 11 El Rancho at Portola, 7 p.m. SATURDAY’S GAMES DIVISION 6 Murrieta Mesa vs. Glendora at Citrus College, 7 p.m. DIVISION 13 Gahr at Pasadena, 7 p.m. DIVISION 14 San Gabriel at Pioneer, 7 p.m.
