The Best Films Playing in New York and Los Angeles Repertory Theaters in December 2024A second half brace from Sam Field ensured the home side collected all three points, but it was a tame attacking performance from United, who managed just one shot on target throughout the game. The U’s have now won just one of their last 14 Sky Bet Championship matches, and dropped to 20th in the table ahead of Saturday’s home clash against 12th-placed Sheffield Wednesday. Buckingham said after the Loftus Road defeat: “We played some really good football and got into the final third several times, and just lacked that cutting edge in the final third, which comes back to haunt you, whether it’s a mistake for the goal or otherwise. “You make it a bit more difficult for yourselves, but there were some really good moments, certainly in the first half when we got into the areas we wanted to get into. “There just wasn’t that crispness that we’ve seen in previous games. “When their first goal goes in, especially when we had what we felt was good control in the game, certainly in that first half until the 53rd minute when their goal went in. “It changes the momentum of the game and changes what the game looks like, and you almost feel like you’ve been hard done by. “It’s about making sure you keep doing what you’re good at, and what’s got you to that. “We concede a very sloppy second goal and then change a few things to try and get ourselves back in the game. “It becomes scrappy and it’s not the result that we wanted. What we do need to do is make sure that good build-up play that we had, we have to add that final third to it, and there’s an opportunity to do that on Saturday. “We don’t want to lose any game. We’ve come to a team that have picked up in the last four games and have picked up some good results. “We came here on Saturday and watched them play, they beat Norwich 3-0 and saw what they can do. “But we’ve got a long way to go this season. What we can’t do is sit and feel sorry for ourselves, and beat ourselves up. “We have to stick together and this is what this group is very good at. We need to make sure we add the final bits in. “From a performance point of view, the most important is the goalscoring element to it.”

Transcontinental Inc. Announces Results for the Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2024

Daniel Jones will become a free agent Monday afternoon, and no shortage of teams have been linked to a potential pursuit. Several have already made contact in advance of a potential quarterback addition for the latter stages of the season. 10 teams have reached out to Jones, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reports . That comes as little surprise given the number of potential destinations which have been floated since he and the Giants agreed to part ways . Suitors — especially those in contention for a deep playoff run — will of course not be interested in taking on the balance of Jones’ 2024 salary by claiming the remainder of his contract. Joining a contender is believed to be of interest to Jones , who will evaluate the outcome of Week 12’s games to get a clearer picture of the QB landscape over the immediate future. A number of teams eyeing a Super Bowl run could upgrade their QB2 spot by signing the former No. 6 pick to a prorated league minimum pact, something which would not lead to an immediate path to playing time. If Jones prefers to see the field before free agency begins, he could turn his attention to a team in need of a reset under center and use the coming weeks as an audition period. While Glazer’s report does not specify which teams have checked in, it does add that at least one suitor is prepared to use Jones as a starter immediately upon signing. Many have pointed to the Raiders as a logical landing spot with neither Aidan O’Connell nor Gardner Minshew impressing in 2024, and Vegas is among the teams which have been tied to Jones in recent days . The 27-year-old could play his way into an extended look with the Raiders depending on his success down the stretch and how the team proceeds regarding the draft. Super Bowl hopefuls like the Lions and Bills have been connected to Jones, and teams such as the Ravens, Dolphins and 49ers (along with others) could be among those worth watching closely once his free agent sweepstakes begin. Given the level of communication which has already taken place on this front, it would come as no surprise if a deal were to be worked out quickly. President-elect Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron held a joint meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris on Saturday ahead of the reopening of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. Macron had sought the meeting to try to initiate a discussion on ending the war in Ukraine, an official in Macron’s office said. The three leaders posed together for photographers at the Elysee Palace and then met privately. Zelenskyy called their discussion “good and productive” in a social media post. “We all want this war to end as soon as possible and in a just way,” he added. The session lasted about a half hour, according to Zelenskyy’s office. The high-profile meeting in a foreign capital is an unusual step for a U.S. presidential election winner still not in office. Incoming and outgoing U.S. leaders traditionally hew to the idea that the country has only one president at a time, particularly in international affairs. But Trump is a familiar figure on the world stage because of his prior presidency. Global leaders are anxious to size up and influence his next steps. The visit to Paris is Trump’s first trip abroad since he won back the White House in November. High-level discussions already have been underway between the Trump and Zelenskyy teams. A top Ukrainian official, Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential administration, met in Washington on Thursday with Vice President JD Vance and members of Trump’s national security team. Zelenskyy has been trying to overcome Trump’s skepticism of Ukraine’s defense against Russia. During the presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed to settle the conflict even before he takes office. Macron welcomed Trump with a red-carpet arrival ceremony at the palace and a show of solidarity as the two men shook hands and embraced in front of photographers. “We’ve had a good time together and we had a lot of success, really great success, working together on defense and offense, too,” Trump said in brief comments to reporters at the start of the meeting. “It certainly seems like the world is going a little crazy right now and we’ll be talking about that.” Shortly before arriving at the presidential palace, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform about the war in Syria, where rebels opposed to President Bashar Assad have made rapid advances. A withdrawal of its troops that are helping back Assad might be “the best thing that can happen” to Russia, he said. The U.S., he added, “should have nothing to do with it. This is not our fight.” Trump came to Paris at a turbulent time for France’s government, which was toppled on Dec. 4 by lawmakers in a no-confidence vote. Despite parliament’s ouster of his prime minister, Macron has vowed to remain in office and serve out the remainder of his presidential term, which runs into 2027. Dozens of heads of state and government were expected to attend the weekend festivities. First lady of the U.S. Jill Biden and the U.K.’s Prince William were also scheduled to attend. Notre-Dame is set to reopen to the public on Sunday. ——— (With assistance from Daryna Krasnolutska.) ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. Visit bloomberg.com. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.None

Sir Clive Cowdery set for bumper windfall on £8.3bn sale of insurance firm Resolution Life to Japanese rival By JESSICA CLARK Updated: 17:00 EST, 11 December 2024 e-mail 1 View comments British tycoon Sir Clive Cowdery could be in line for a bumper windfall after the sale of his insurance firm to a Japanese rival. The entrepreneur will stay on as chief executive and chairman of insurer Resolution Life following the £8.3billion deal with Osaka-headquartered Nippon Life. The sale could land him a huge payout – possibly billions – though the exact figure remains a secret because the size of his stake is unknown. The deal comes amid a spate of takeovers across the world including the recent £3.6billion bid by UK insurer Aviva for smaller, struggling rival Direct Line. This week alone has seen US advertising firms Omnicom and Interpublic agree a £10billion tie-up while Cadbury owner Mondelez has been rebuffed in its bid for rival chocolate maker Hershey Set up by Cowdery in 2008, Resolution Life has around £67billion in assets under management and more than 4m insurance policies. It grew by snapping up books of life insurance policies around the world from insurers. Cashing in: Sir Clive Cowdery will stay on as chief exec and chairman of insurer Resolution Life following its £8.3bn sale to Osaka-headquartered Nippon Life The businessman also set up left-leaning think-tank Resolution Foundation, which says it is focused on improving the living standards of low-to-middle income households. The research group calculates the real Living Wage, a voluntary hourly pay rate set above the Government’s official minimum pay bands. Cowdery was knighted in 2016 for services to children and social mobility. He is also the publisher of current affairs magazine Prospect, which is run by former Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger. As a director of lobbying group Best for Britain until 2021, Cowdery helped lead a campaign to stop Brexit. As it is a private business, the size of his remaining stake in Resolution has not been made public. But he is probably set for a huge pay day from a deal that values it at £8.3billion. It plans to make the Bermuda-based firm a wholly owned subsidiary by the end of 2025. Other investors include US private equity giant Blackstone, which will continue to be its investment management partner after the takeover. Cowdery said: ‘Combining Resolution Life’s strengths, the investment management expertise of Blackstone and a well-funded parent gives us the opportunity to accelerate growth and serve the needs of policyholders into the decades ahead.’ Nippon will also acquire the 20 per cent stake it does not own in MLC Life from National Australia Bank for about £250.6million and merge it with Resolution Life Australasia to form Acenda, a life insurer. It is the largest-ever overseas acquisition by a Japanese insurer. Footie pay for bosses City bosses should be paid like top footballers to attract the best, a billionaire financier has said. Lord Michael Spencer, founder of stockbroker ICAP, now part of TP ICAP, told the Financial Times: ‘We don’t mind paying top-rate footballers extraordinary amounts. That’s considered perfectly acceptable. But if the [chief executive] of BP or HSBC earns £20million a year – less than their peer group in America – everyone jumps up and down, saying this is an outrage.’ Spencer, a former Tory party treasurer, said the disparity was one reason UK firms lagged behind. Average pay for FTSE 100 execs was around £4.1million last year. Susan Collins, R-Maine, on Capitol Hill, Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein) WASHINGTON (AP) — Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Defense Department, said he had a “wonderful conversation” with Maine Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday as he pushed to win enough votes for confirmation. He said he will not back down after allegations of excessive drinking and sexual misconduct. Collins said after the hourlong meeting that she questioned Hegseth about the allegations amid reports of drinking and the revelation that he made a settlement payment after being that he denies. She said she had a “good, substantive” discussion with Hegseth and “covered a wide range of topics,” including sexual assault in the military, Ukraine and NATO. But she said she would wait until a hearing, and notably a background check, to make a decision. “I asked virtually every question under the sun,” Collins told reporters as she left her office after the meeting. “I pressed him both on his position on military issues as well as the allegations against him, so I don’t think there was anything that we did not cover.” The meeting with Collins was closely watched as she is seen as more likely than most of her Republican Senate colleagues to vote against some of Trump’s Cabinet picks. She and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a fellow moderate Republican, did not shy from opposing Trump in his first term when they wanted to do so and sometimes supported President Joe Biden’s nominees for the judicial and executive branches. And Hegseth, an infantry combat veteran and former “Fox & Friends” weekend host, is working to gain as many votes as he can as some senators have expressed concerns about his personal history and lack of management experience. “I’m certainly not going to assume anything about where the senator stands,” Hegseth said as he left Collins’ office. “This is a process that we respect and appreciate. And we hope, in time, overall, when we get through that committee and to the floor that we can earn her support.” Hegseth met with Murkowski on Tuesday. He has also been meeting repeatedly with Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, a military veteran who has said she is a survivor of sexual assault and has spent time in the Senate working on improving how attacks are reported and prosecuted within the ranks. On Monday, Ernst said after a meeting with him that he had committed to selecting a senior official to prioritize those goals. Republicans will have a 53-49 majority next year, meaning Trump cannot lose more than three votes on any of his nominees. It is so far unclear whether Hegseth will have enough support, but Trump has stepped up his pressure on senators in the last week. “Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” Trump posted on his social media platform last week.Three reasons why Andy Murray’s appointment as Novak Djokovic’s coach could be a ‘masterstroke’

Ronald E. AndrewsMECHANICSBURG — Northwestern Lehigh and Avonworth put on another instant classic at Chapman Field Saturday afternoon. The District 11 champion Tigers marched into the PIAA 3A championship game with one goal, to win a state championship. District 7 champion Avonworth had the same goal, so something had to give. • Sign up for PennLive’s daily high school sports newsletter In the end, Northwestern Lehigh (16-0) came away with a thrilling 36-33 overtime victory against the Antelopes (12-4). Offense was at a premium all afternoon. The run game was cooking on both sides as there was a total of 462 combined yards on the ground for the game. The Tigers and Antelopes scored on each of the first seven drives of the game, there wasn’t a stop to be had defensively for nearly three quarters. When a stop did happen, it was in a big spot. Up by six, Northwestern Lehigh registered the first defensive stop of the game when Micheal Lagowy that Eli Zimmerman recovered. Zimmerman later punched it in from one yard out, giving the Tigers a 14-point lead. The Lopes looked dead in the water after the 13-point swing. Avonworth Luca Neal changed that quickly. Q3, 1:42 — Oh it’s a game! Luca Neal puts the Antelopes right back in it after breaking loose for a 54-yard run down the sideline and to the house. Northwestern Lehigh 30, Avonworth 23 pic.twitter.com/HAJrHy6IGn The Lopes scored another touchdown tying the game, taking the two teams to overtime. The stars The battle between Neal and Zimmerman was fun to watch. Northwestern Lehigh head coach joked that the Avonworth back finished with 80 carries. Neal was halfway there with 36 carries for 252 yards and four touchdowns. He carried the Lopes’ offense the entire afternoon. While the numbers aren’t as gaudy as Neal’s, Zimmerman was just as effective, rushing for 123 yards and three touchdowns of his own. Including the walk-off touchdown in overtime. Game-winning moments Avonworth opened overtime with a field goal. So, if the Tigers scored a touchdown, the game is over. Zimmerman wasted no time getting into the endzone for Northwestern Lehigh. FINAL (OT) — Northwestern Lehigh 36, Avonworth 33 Eli Zimmerman takes the first snap 10 yards in and the Tigers are PIAA 3A champions! Another instant classic at Chapman. pic.twitter.com/6CTFeLFBrd They said it “Unbelievable game. Hats off to those guys over there in Avonworth. What a football game, it must’ve been great to watch. It was a little heart thumping in there for a while. Our kids just kept coming and kept answering the bell.” - Northwestern Lehigh head coach Josh Snyder said after the game. “We struggled there in the last couple possessions on offense. We brought out a Bronco formation that we didn’t show on film. We blocked it up well. Eli (Zimmerman) can make anybody miss one on one. When he went in, I didn’t know how to think, react or respond.” - Snyder on the playcall for the final play of the game. “We called an inside run to the right, I saw the gap close and I just bounced it outside. Micheal (Lagowy) held his block just long enough to let me read off of him, and the rest was history.” - Northwestern Lehigh running back Eli Zimmerman on what he saw on the final play of the game. -- Thanks for visiting PennLive.
